THE VERB BE

(a) John   is  a   student            
            (BE)    (NOUN)
(b) John   is     intelligent              
            (BE)   (ADJECTIVE)
(c) John  was    at the library              
            (BE)   (PREP PHRASE)

A sentence with be as the main verb has three basic patterns
In (a) : be + a noun
In (b) : be + an adjective
In (c) : be + a prepositional phrase

BE is also used as an auxiliary verb in progressive verb tenses and in the passive

In (d) : is = auxiliary        
        Writing = main verb
